How HonkMatch picks your car

Most car sites start with a wall of filters: make, model, trim, body style. That works if you already know what you want. HonkMatch starts with you instead. Tell it about your life in your own words, and it works out what that means in a car.

The matchmaker

An AI model (Claude, by Anthropic) reads what you wrote and reads between the lines: two car seats and a big dog means a wide back seat and a flat cargo floor, ski weekends mean real all-wheel drive and room for gear. It picks three to five cars, names the model years and trim to shop, and tells you what's good, what isn't, and what to check before you buy.

Checked against real data

The matchmaker can only recommend cars it finds in the EPA fuel economy database, which covers every car and light truck sold in the US. Each match shows EPA combined MPG (or electric range), and the NHTSA overall crash-test rating, recall count and owner complaints for that model year. Those numbers come straight from the government data, not from the AI.

Prices are estimates of what that car typically sells for. Real prices depend on miles, condition and where you live, so check the listing.

Trade-ins and payments

Tell it what you're trading in, what you still owe, how much cash you have and your rough credit, and every match shows a monthly payment to buy it and, for new cars, to lease it. The matchmaker estimates your trade-in (what a dealer would offer and what it might sell for privately), your local sales tax and fees, and current loan and lease rates. The payments themselves are calculated with the standard loan and lease formulas, and you can change any of the numbers on the results page to see how the payments move.

Finding one for sale

Every match has a search for listings near your ZIP, with the model, years and price already set, on the big listing sites. HonkMatch doesn't sell cars and isn't paid by dealers.

Your matches

Each match gets its own link you can save or send to someone. Anyone with the link can see it, so leave out anything you wouldn't want shared. Questions or ideas: [email protected].

Questions

Is HonkMatch free?

Yes. There's no sign-up, and nobody pays to have their cars recommended.

Where do the prices come from?

Price ranges are the matchmaker's estimate of what those model years typically sell for, informed by current listings and pricing guides it searches. Live listings near you show real asking prices from dealers.

Why didn't it pick the car I was expecting?

Tell it. Every match has a box to change things ("what about a Tacoma?", "cheaper", "no SUVs") and it will adjust the list or explain why a car doesn't fit what you said.

Does it cover electric cars and hybrids?

Yes. The EPA data includes every hybrid, plug-in and electric car sold in the US, and EV matches show EPA range instead of MPG.

What isn't covered?

Heavy-duty pickups (like the F-250 and up) and some large vans aren't in the EPA fuel economy data, so the matchmaker can mention them but can't show their numbers. Crash-test ratings only exist for the cars NHTSA tests.
